No Tickets, No Refund, No Apology, Nada….

I purchased three tickets from United Airlines. One for my wife and one for each of my two sons from the United States to Japan. There were some billing problems but, we called the airlines on multiple occasions and were reassured that it had all been worked out and that our reservations were secure.

Upon arriving at the airport, my wife and kids attempted to check in. The lady at the counter looked confused and told us that regretfully that while they had reservations, there were no tickets associated with the reservations. We asked if they could take the next flight. We were told that the next flight was the next day and we would have to pay $10,000. We were able to rebook on American Airlines for the next day at approximately $3,000 (and close to the cost of the original United tickets). My wife’s high-school reunion was the next day but because of the delay, she missed it.

United Airlines refused to refund the funds and instead said that they would issue a credit. The bank manager got involved and the United Airlines representative hung up on him. When we went to use the credit (over a year later) we were told that the ticket had expired. (We were never told that there would be an expiration date to our “credit”.) So we have no refund nor any tickets to show for the approximately $3,000 we spent on tickets.
